Oxford Awake!

Published:

Continuing our Strength Through Joy program, a company of BM activists recently voyaged into Oxford to savour the many wonders this ancient settlement has to offer.

On arriving at the train station, our delegates were first met by a sculpture of a powerful ox – a nod to Oxford’s name and identity. Its name is traditionally understood to mean the place where oxen crossed the River Cherwell.

Our assembly then strolled into the city centre – enchanted by the historic streets, old taverns and riverside scenery.

It’s easy to see why Oxford is one of England’s most historic and internationally recognised cities. Oxford is predominantly known for its colleges and academic excellence. Oxford University is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with teaching dating back to as early as 1096. The university is famed for its communist student societies, especially The October Club. So, it came as no surprise to see radical left-wing graffiti, Communist indoctrination and Marxist propagandism littering the municipality.

Following a tour of the castle prison, our BM band then visited the Saxon St. George’s Tower. Oxford is often called “the City of Dreaming Spires”, a phrase inspired by its distinctive skyline of church towers, college buildings and university architecture. The stunning panoramic views gave a welcome respite after climbing the 101 steps.

Luckily, the company was in time to visit the Ashmolean Museum just before it closed. The museum is home to a small collection of items originating from Scandinavia, dating back to the Viking age.

The Ändersta Rune Stone

After the Vikings arrived in Britannia, in the late 700s, several Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were unified through conquest and intermarriage. At one point all but Wessex was under Viking rule. However, that was until King Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings at the battle of Edington in 878.

After traversing several miles around the city, our weary troop rested for refreshments at a local hostelry and enjoyed a hearty meal and a couple of well-deserved pints.

A great day was enjoyed by all, and they look forward to the next adventure.
