A Blue Plaque ceremony to promote a Marxist version of Leeds history.
The Political Left Can Never Be Trusted To Tell The Truth. Holbeck Moor, Leeds. Sunday, September 29th 2024.
After a great deal of mainstream media promotion, the assembled organisations of the Left mustered at Holbeck Moor to ensure that the cultural Marxist version of history was duly recorded with plenty of media coverage and photo-opportunities. The ceremony was attended by Leeds MPs Hilary Benn, Richard Burgon and Fabian Hamilton.
Advertising for the ceremony and connected meetings and a music event had been heavily promoted across September by Leeds Civic Trust, Stand Up to Racism Leeds and assorted leftist organisations. The actual events on the day were given high profile coverage by the BBC (Leeds), the Yorkshire Evening Post and assorted local newspapers and social media outlets, and again by Leeds Civic Trust and by South Leeds Life.
For example:
“September 5, 2024 The Battle of Holbeck Moor – Blue Plaque Unveiling.
Leeds Civic Trust is pleased to unveil a blue plaque for The Battle of Holbeck Moor. 29th September 2024 from 14:00 to 14:30.
On 27th September 1936, leader of the British Union of Fascists Oswald Mosley attempted to hold a rally of 1000 Blackshirts in Leeds. Mosely and the Blackshirts were met with a crowd of 30,000 anti-fascists who disrupted the rally. This victory over fascism has since become known as The Battle of Holbeck Moor.
We will celebrate our city’s anti-fascist heritage on the 29th September, with a blue plaque for The Battle of Holbeck Moor. We would love for you to join us.
Schedule:
14:00: Blue Plaque Unveiling.
14:30: Guests are invited for blue plaque cupcakes.
Funds for this plaque were raised through a crowdfunder. We are grateful to all those that donated.
Date and time: 29th September 2024 from 14:00 to 14:30
Location: Holbeck Moor, Holbeck, Leeds, West Yorkshire LS11 9QL”

The plaque has been organised by Leeds Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) who organised a Crowdfunder to meet the costs.
The Blue Plaque reads:
The Battle of Holbeck Moor
On 27 September 1936, 30,000 people assembled to prevent the leader of the British Union of Fascists Sir
Oswald Mosley, and his Blackshirts, from holding a rally.
‘They shall not pass.’
Leeds Civic Trust Director, Martin Hamilton said;
“Most of our plaques commemorate individuals or buildings but this one is different. It tells the story of national news at the time and was an important statement of defiance as World War II approached. It is a story that deserves to be better known, and I am delighted that we are able to support this blue plaque.”
Sam Kirk, Stand up to Racism (SUTR) said;
“Mosley was stopped from whipping up racism in Leeds by the sheer numbers of people opposing him. He was sent a clear message that he was not welcome. When the far right try to divide us and turn people against those seeking asylum or who are of particular religions they should be given the same message today. Let’s commemorate the past and ensure that Leeds remains fascist free now and in the future.”
Councillor Andrew Scopes (Labour, Beeston & Holbeck) said;
“I’m delighted that The Battle of Holbeck Moor is being recognised as a significant moment in the history of our area. It feels like a really relevant moment for this Blue Plaque to be unveiled and to celebrate how Leeds united against fascism.”
“As part of the project, SUTR have traced family members of some of the 30,000, something that has never been done before. Previous studies have mainly focused on the event itself rather than the people that attended.
“From Janice, whose mother was a young teenager, to Jeremy whose grandfather helped mobilise people and whose mother, also a young teenager, attended to Mick whose grandfather walked from Batley to be on the Moor that day.
“Whilst we are still trying to find more people, the stories of those we have found are part of the proud history of Leeds. There will be a display on the day of their stories and we will hear from some of the relatives at the unveiling. The unveiling will take place at 2pm on Sunday 29 September on Holbeck Moor.”
This post is based on press releases issued by Leeds Civic Trust and Leeds Stand Up To Racism.
According to much local and regional mainstream media coverage, not only would this Blue Plaque be publicly unveiled, but afterwards any interested citizens could view the plaque on display on the outer wall of St. Matthews Church *these days St Matthews Community hub.
In their words:
“The plaque has been placed on St Matthew’s Church and celebrations included blue plaque cupcakes. The unveiling was attended by Leeds South MP Hilary Benn, Leeds North East MP Fabian Hamilton and relatives of people who were at the rally.”
In light of all this media output a small team of researchers from British Movement West Yorkshire region visited Holbeck Moor in the early part of October 2024. The team carried out a short tour of the area with the view to producing an account of the location and a more accurate history of the events of September 1936.
However, when the curious BM team failed to find the location of the much celebrated ‘Blue Plaque’, they cautiously asked questions of the staff at St Matthews, only to be told that the work to mount the plaque on the building had not in fact taken place, contrary to all the media statements and the actual blue plaque was currently in storage with the Leeds Civic Trust.
So media accuracy was not a priority and this “historic Blue Plaque” is not actually on public view. At a later date the BM team will return to Holbeck Moor to record this ‘historic’ token of Leeds history.
This exercise just goes to show that when it comes to accurately reporting on events the political Left cannot be trusted to tell the whole story, in fact the Left can never be trusted to tell the whole truth. The truth is that the events on Sunday September 29th 2024 was a propaganda exercise by the combined forces of the Cultural Marxist Left, heavily promoted by willing allies in the mainstream media and local
organisations;
Here the words of Ms Sam Kirk (SUTR) make the actual motivation behind the Blue Plaque events crystal clear; “Sam Kirk from Stand Up To Racism said the group had been overwhelmed with the enthusiasm from fundraisers.” Ms Kirk said the plaque was a reminder of the dangers of extremism.
She said: “It is reminiscent of what we’ve seen in the UK. People are trying to bring the far right together… But we don’t want a return to the 1930s or the 40s, the politics of hate is not what people want.”
The plaque will mirror similar ones that mark the Battle of Cable Street in east London and the Battle of Stockton in Stockton-on-Tees.
Ms Kirk said: “The wording on the plaque links them all together and that is ‘they shall not pass’.”
And the Left never miss an opportunity to raise more money for their ‘revolutionary cause’.

As with all activities organised by the extremist Left, this event was not only heavily promoted but was supported with plenty of expensively, professionally produced propaganda materials, leaflets, banners and posters. Pictured here are a couple of examples of crudely applied leaflets removed from structures around Holbeck Moor by the BM team.
Another example of BM actively engaged in ‘Operation Deep Clean’ in West Yorkshire, clearing away the left-wing propaganda as we counter their distortion of history.

The Blackshirts marched to Holbeck Moor, Oswald Mosley spoke at a meeting then the BUF marched back to their HQ. The red involvement was throwing missiles at the blackshirts over the top of the police lines then running away, hardly heroic.
