On Sunday 23rd July, the annual Muharram Jaloos procession was held in Manchester, starting in Plattfields Park before making its way to the Jaffaria Islamic Centre. In scenes that could have come straight from the Islamic Republic of Iran, self-flagellation came to the streets of Manchester.

Scores of bare-chested men slapped their chests with their palms and fists. Shocked bystanders watched in disbelief at the disturbing alien rituals which the Asian males performed on the rainy streets of this Northern town. Unfortunately, scenes like this are becoming more and more common as the immigrant population continues to grow.

A quick search on the web tells us all we need to know about this ritual: ‘Shia Muslims cut and flagellate themselves with sharp objects in passionate commemoration of the death of Prophet Muhammad’s grandson in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD’. In 1993, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, leader of Iran issued a fatwa calling flagellation wrong, fake and false.

Iran comes to Manchester.

“The most precious possession you have in the world is.. your own people. And for this people and the sake of this people, we will struggle and fight and never slacken, never tire, never lose courage, and never lose faith”.

Adolf Hitler
